This year’s 4th of July falls smack in the middle of the week, making getaways tricky for those Hipsilver’s tied down to a job. Independence Day is a federal holiday observing the adoption and signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Nowadays, we celebrate the day with death-defying firework shows, heartwarming parades, family barbeques, carnivals and street fairs, picnics, patriotic concerts, baseball games, and family reunions. As New York City is HipSiver’s headquarters, we want to share with you two of the most popular New York City traditions on the 4th of July.

July 4th in NYC means two things: fireworks and hot dogs. The Macy’s fireworks display is a tradition that started in 1976. This year the fireworks will feature classic tunes reimagined with refreshing twists. The highlight of the show will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America” with a soulful performance by Kelly Clarkson and accompanied by the West Point Band and Glee Club. The entire production will last 25 minutes and includes 70 singers from the West Point Glee Club and 76 musicians from the West Point Band. Additionally, the fireworks will have 20 new shells and effects such as the Neon Pinwheel and Pulsing Hearts. There will also be 25 colors from red and amber to titanium and brocade gold. This year’s fireworks display will be stunning; you don’t want to miss out on the patriotic fun!

Another New York 4th of July tradition is the original Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest. The first ever recorded contest was in 1972, and it is held at Coney Island every Independence Day.  Since 1972, winners of the competition have eaten a total of 1,509 Nathan’s Famous beef franks. That’s approximately 330 pounds! See if this will be the year that somebody breaks the record for most hot dogs consumed in 10 minutes. In addition to the contest, you can also spend the day relaxing on the beach and enjoying some of the classic fried-fare with your family.

Most importantly, if you’re planning on celebrating the day in your backyard, in the park, or on the beach, don’t forget about protecting your skin to keep you looking ageless. Hipsilver recommends the following product for some of the best sun protection. We have also rounded up a few fun getaway items - ranging from beach blankets and towels to caftans and hostess gifts.
